Having underlayment underneath your laminate flooring is essential, because it allows the floor to float. Laminate flooring is not nailed or glued down, so it needs some form of support. Think of it like a large jigsaw puzzle, which will be expanding and shifting as the climate changes. While laminate flooring is quiet to walk on, noise can easily be transferred to the floor below without the proper underlayment.
