Fiber optic sensors have many advantages over other types of sensors:

They consist of electrically insulating materials (no cables required) which make them useful, for example, in high pressure environments.
They can be safely used in explosive environments because there is no risk of sparking even in the presence of defects.
They are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and can cause electric shock to other equipment, even in the vicinity of lightning strikes.
Their materials can be chemically passive, ie they will not pollute their surroundings and will not be corroded.
