Static synchronous compensator
Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is a kind of facts device with parallel reactive power compensation. It can generate or absorb reactive power, and its output can be changed to control specific parameters in power system. Generally, it is a kind of solid-state switching converter. When its input end is connected with power supply or energy storage device, its output can independently generate or absorb controllable active and reactive power; it can improve the power system functions in the following aspects: dynamic voltage control, power oscillation damping, transient stability, voltage flicker control, etc. Compared with the traditional reactive power compensation device, STATCOM has the advantages of continuous regulation, small harmonic, low loss, wide operation range, high reliability and fast regulation speed. Since its inception, STATCOM has been widely concerned and developed rapidly.
Basic concepts
Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM or SVG) is a kind of dynamic reactive power compensation equipment based on voltage source converter (VSC), which is a typical representative of the second generation FACTS devices. It is a dynamic reactive power compensation device which generates and absorbs reactive power by self commutating power semiconductor bridge converter. It is composed of AC link and DC link. The AC link is connected with the system. It first converts the AC energy of the system into DC through the converter and stores it in the accumulator on the DC side. At the same time, the voltage and current at the DC side are converted into AC voltage and current through the converter and transmitted to the system.
It regards the converter circuit as an AC voltage source which produces fundamental wave and harmonic voltage. By controlling the magnitude and phase of fundamental voltage of compensator, the magnitude and phase of fundamental reactive current can be changed. When the fundamental voltage of the converter is higher than that of the AC power supply, the converter will produce a lead (capacitive) reactive current. On the contrary, when the fundamental voltage of the converter is lower than that of the AC power supply, a hysteresis (inductive) reactive current will be generated. Therefore, it can exchange reactive power with the system, and it is also called "static reactive power generator" (SVG). Different from capacitor (the current of capacitor decreases proportionally at low voltage), the static var generator can generate rated current under various system voltages, which is similar to the rotating synchronous motor with three sinusoidal symmetrical voltage.
Basic principle of static synchronous compensator
The static synchronous compensator uses the power electronic device of voltage source converter to generate reactive power. Voltage source converter transforms DC voltage into three-phase voltage with required amplitude, frequency and phase. The output voltage of the three-level converter can be different from that of the static power compensator as shown in the figure below.
From the name of the static synchronous compensator, it can be seen that the static synchronous compensator has the similar performance with the synchronous condenser. However, as an electronic equipment, the static synchronous compensator has no inertia, so it is superior to the synchronous condenser in some aspects, such as fast dynamic response, low investment cost, low operation and maintenance cost.
Characteristics of static synchronous compensator
With the advent of static synchronous compensator, its superior performance can also be applied to the following aspects:
1) Dynamic voltage control in power transmission and distribution system;
2) Power oscillation damping in transmission system;
3) The transient stability of power system is improved;
4) Active power and reactive power control. It can not only control reactive power, but also control active power (DC power supply can be obtained) if necessary.
The static synchronous compensator has other advantages as follows:
1) Small size (compact electronic converter replaces passive components);
2) Factory modular products (reduce installation and commissioning time);
3) The packaged electronic converter is adopted (the influence of environment on the equipment is reduced).
