A furnace is part of the HVAC system inside of buildings that provides heating to the building by warming air and sending it through the ductwork. They can also be known as boilers or heaters (although both of these are more general terms).
The central heater in your house is the appliance that's responsible for moving warm air throughout your home to ensure that all rooms are evenly heated and comfortable. 
The furnace is what creates the heat that's then distributed.
Furnaces 
get their name from the Greek word "fornax," which means oven. The first furnaces were stone or clay structures that used coal and/or wood to create intense heat. These furnaces were primarily used for ceramic work, such as with kilns, and smelting ore to create metal objects, tools, and materials.
Both your forced air (furnace) and central air (AC) systems use the same parts to cool and heat your home. The outdoor condenser and compressor, indoor fans, and evaporator coils cycle refrigerant and draw hot home air inside while releasing heat, then draw cooled air back through your vents.
Furnace heats the air in the winter and the blower circulates air through the home. AC evaporator coil removes heat and humidity in summer. Condensate line carries excess moisture to floor drain. Compressor circulates refrigerant through evaporator coil and expels heat outdoors.
